In April 1968, students at Columbia University and the nearby women’s college, Barnard, occupied five campus buildings and for one week brought the prestigious institution to its knees. Led by the Students’ Afro-American Society in coalition with the white students, they fought against the Vietnam War and the university racism. The Columbia Revolt riveted the nation and began a wave of defiance felt for years.
